And my old social studies teacher used to say that the problem with science is that it is already too far gone in its own opinion. Under the pressures of thought and conception and unabashedly influenced by society and the world, Talk Midway has introduced the aspect of ‘reflection’ onto Already Dead Tapes and Records, while still leaving the ‘as is’ as ‘as is.’
Patrick Nylen, (the sole musician in Talk Midway,) is New York based and proclaims himself to “reflect diy values.” A very meditative mix and experimental noise, each album demonstrates the craft of ambient sounds layered over tracks of samplings from societal influences, global events – and personal dealings with it all. Subtly manipulative digital and analog whirs, with a few traditional instruments recorded on a couple of tracks. Like I said, he is not so much as making a suggestive statement as he is simply tapping into the unpronounced illusions and effects the world is having on us. They are songs of reflection rather than opinion, which is something many artists struggle with when expressing feelings.

While recording their debut album "Time Keeps Making Time Keeps Making", the guys of Dutch psychedelic band Teen Radiation went on a little surf trip. They left the villa in the south of France, where they were recording their hazed up jams, to drive to Portugal to hit the waves. Since the guys from Spread Motion were also there and brought their cam, an improvised video arose from the ashes. uuhh... waves. This is a deep water adventure if you have ever seen one, awesome underwater and above water footage of a couple of guys riding waves in the sunset and bringing the dense jam of the band, now renamed "Surfer's Paradise", to life in shiny technicolor.
As an added bonus, the guys of Teen Radiation decided to also start spreading a bonus disc, with another 50 minutes of Sun-Ra-meets-Les-Rallizes-Denudes-in-a-garage jams. The debut album "Time Keeps Making Time Keeps Making" is out now and only available through the nice people at Boomkat. The free bonus disc is available for download.

Daniel often is hailed as the successor to the Jack Rose/John Fahey school of American guitar, but his new release falls outside of those simplified parameters. Improvised and recorded dirty into a boombox "Grey-Black-Green" has more to do with Loren Mazzacane Connors, Ben Chasny or even some of Bill Orcut's recent acoustic work. The titled is a reference to Robbie Basho's “Esoteric Doctrine Of Color & Mood” as Daniel puts it: "There’s a chart based on a circle of fifths where every key represents a color and a mood. 'Grey Black Green' is the most fucked up sounding one." Droning dark improvised American ragas by a very impressive young talent.

What a metamorphosis Crystal Hell Pool's undergone with Domain. Previous releases like Incantation to Nothingness and Infinity Medicine offer minimal ambient music that plumbs both radiant heights and tenebrous depths. Reference points include Mick Harris's isolationist Lull project, Brian Eno's beautifully desolate On Land, and Eliane Radigue's ARP synthesizer "aum"s—sounds geared toward deepest introspection and meditation. In other words, the output of Crystal Hell Pool (Seattle musician Chris Majerus) is the polar opposite of party music. Domain won't get spun on C89.5 or anything, but compared to past releases, it seems positively ecstatic. The most obvious difference here is that the tracks pulsate and have actual beats—beats that humans may even want to dance to. In an oblique way, Domain is a disco record; in a more overt way, it's a horror-film soundtrack waiting for a perverse Italian director to create grotesque images for it. "Life in Silence" lurches like an ogre in lead boots while synths whorl disorientingly above the menacing rhythm. "Visionaire" shimmies into a foreboding 4/4 groove somewhere between Goblin and Giorgio Moroder, entering a condition that PiL coined on their 1979 single: "Death Disco." The steadfast beats of "Debris" sound like gunshots in the distance while CHP's synths arpeggiate and swell in post-midnight melodrama. "After Image" evokes a beautifully damned Chris & Cosey club anti-anthem. But tracks like "Radioactive Cop," "Disembodied Features," and "Melting Face, Melting Hands"—pitiless trawls down industrial music's darkest, loneliest alleyways—show that CHP still ain't ready to throw his arms in the air and wave 'em like he just don't care. Deep down, he's still harboring antisocial feelings—but, thankfully, they manifest themselves in chilling, gripping music.

I rarely contribute to or put out tapes this long. However, the approach I wanted to take toward this recording specifically called for length. This tape is centered around the painstakingly slow process of having no choice but to mentally let go of something held dear. One of the elements of healthily coping with loss is to accept what is not in one's power to change. To manifest this concept audibly, I decided to let the instruments play themselves while I stepped back and "accepted" what I was hearing. Before recording, I routed and tweaked electronics so that there would be constant, out-of-sync, mysterious, apparent audible movement when initiated; oscillation and waveforms soaring against and within each other at a sluggish rate. Although I feel that these recordings could have been better composed and more dynamic, I let things operate naturally in order stay true to the concept. What you will hear on this tape is a form of nature uniquely taking it's course.

I spoke with Yasutoshi, the man behind Government Alpha, about the recent Earthquake in Japan. He described it as "a terrible shaking!" The same could be said to describe the material he submitted to Rainbow Bridge for this release. It is almost as if he manifested the recent Japanese natural disasters in noise-form months before they occurred. This tape is plagued with swirling, swarming, scathing, oscillating textures that do not follow most harsh noise trends. These sounds seem to hurl you into a spiral of head-melting chaos more so than they crush your skull. Side B is a live performance recorded in June of 2010 is even more dynamic and diverse, including some nutty screaming from Yasutoshi's own vocal chords. This material is strange, ruthless, and the more I listen to it, the more I love it. Japanoise at it's finest, ladies and dicks.

"The City Beneath" is a longform dark ambient piece inspired by the epic, groundbreaking 1927 science fiction silent film "Metropolis" by German director Fritz Lang. The composition explores the themes presented in the film and in particular, the subterranean city of the oppressed working class. The City Beneath" was composed and recorded in early May of 2010 and released as a CDr on Black Drone: 13 Series on May 13, 2010 (catalog # 13-7) in an edition of 26 copies. By 2011, "The City Beneath" was completely sold out and had gone out of print. The original recording was very slightly tweaked, cleaned up and overall remastered in late July 2011 and re-released on Subterrestrial Netlabel.

Romantic States is music made by Jim Triplett, of the now hibernating(?) Videohippos, from Baltimore Maryland. Romantic States has so far released three singles on beko-dsl, and a full length cassette on Tater Junction.

This most recent release is a six song EP titled “Still Petals”, coming out on beko-dsl, a French net-label with releases by Memoryhouse, Eternal Summers, Wet Hair, Sore Eros, and more. The Still Petals EP was written by Triplett and recorded with the help of sound engineering wizards Jared Paolini and Craig Bowen.

Live performances are made possible with the help of keyboardist Ilenia Madelaire. Notable shows have included Whartscape 2010, Soft Fest 2010, and opening for Future Islands at the Black Cat in Washington DC.

The third long-play by “Gamardah Fungus” (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) is named after a common funerary practice in Tibet, wherein a human corpse is cut in specific locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to birds of prey. The government of China prohibited the practice (which it considered barbaric) in the 1960s but started to allow it again in the 1980s. This practice is considered to be not only honorable but also the only acceptable by many Tibetans.

This album takes its origins in the admiration that Gamardah Fungus musicians feel for Tibetan spirit and traditions. Main theme from "Celestial Funerals" was performed by their friend and colleague Tenzin Sambu.

Genre borders have expanded since the duo's previous work. Besides the ambient atmosphere, brown noise and keyboards this record features the sounds of meditative drums, movie samples and self-made instruments, including waterphone and kalimba. In general, all the five tracks on this album can be described as a mixture of funeral doom and dark ambient.
